KIS has implemented a Bring Your Own Laptop (BYOL) programme to help students develop greater independence, increase engagement, and develop skills required to thrive in the 21st Century. Students from Grade 6 – Grade 12 are required to bring their own laptops daily to use for educational purposes, to access resources, complete assignments, and for personal organization.

Recommended Laptop: Macbook is recommended because of the following reasons:

• It’s compatible with the computers in the classrooms and Secondary School Design and Technology lab (iMacs) and classroom ICT resources (iPads, Apple TV, etc)

• It’s convenient in sending/receiving file(s) via Airdrop to/from Apple devices (Most Secondary School students bring Macbooks to school)

• Seamlessly connect/sync with other Apple devices (iPhone, iPad or iMac)

Minimum Hardware Requirements

Apple Macbook

  • Mac OS 10.14 or above, wifi 802.11 AC capability
  • CPU: M1, Core i5 or above, RAM 8 GB or above
  • Hard Disk 256 GB or above (solid state disk (SSD) suggested
  • 13” monitor, screen resolution 1280×800 or above
  • Size and strength: Light enough to carry around school yet strong enough to last for many years.


Windows Laptop

  • Windows 10 Home Single language licence or above.
  • 4th generation Intel Core i5 (equivalent) or above
  • x1 USB 3.0 port
  • 12 inches or above screen size
  • 802.11ac wireless capability
  • Students should also have their own headphones for their laptop
  • Built-in camera and microphone
  • Good battery life – 8hrs +Internal storage of 256 GB or above
  • DDR3 RAM of 8 GB or above
 
Minimum Software Requirements

  • Apart from basic software for the internet web browsing (e.g. Chrome, Firefox), document production and data processing (e.g. Google Workspace, MS Office, Libreoffice), PDF creator and reader, digital image viewer and image editing, movie and sound player, Secondary School students also need specific software for MYP Design and DP Design Technology as follows:
    • Adobe Creative Cloud (optional, check with the Design teacher first)
    • Autodesk Fusion 360
    • Affinity Designer, Photo, Publisher
